Choosing the Right Copper Shim Thickness
Select the gauge to match both the spacing requirement and the conductive duty. Thin copper shims from 0.025mm to 0.10mm suit fine adjustment, precision spacing and light electrical contacts; 0.10mm to 0.50mm covers general gasketing, heat-sink mounts and bus-bar interfaces; and thicker stock from 0.50mm up to 3.00mm handles structural packing and heavier current paths. For conductive or thermal interfaces, prefer a single clean layer at the exact thickness over a stack, which introduces resistance between layers.
Cutting and Fitting Copper Shim Stock
Measure the required thickness with feeler gauges or a micrometer before cutting. Simple shapes can be sheared with tin snips or punched by hand, while more intricate profiles benefit from laser cutting, waterjet or CNC. Fit the shim flat, without wrinkles or warping, and avoid stacking more than about four layers — for conductive or thermal interfaces especially, a clean single layer at the exact thickness performs best.
